Abstract

The structural trend lines are significant geological structural features, which are important in the geological studies. It is an important geological and structural indicator to ascertain tectonic trends, landform, hydrocarbon trap (geological trap), dome and basin structures, geological resources, etc. The main aim of the study is to map the structural trend lines of the study area using geospatial technology and to represent the capability of the geospatial technology in structural trend lines mapping. IRS-1C LISS-III image was utilized for mapping trend lines using visual image interpretation techniques. The results indicate that fold axes are fall on NW-SE directions. Structural trend line indicates that geological force may act in NE-SW directions. Few ring like structures have been observed, which probably indicates dome or basin structure. This study shows that structural trend of Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli areas have complex folding and high degree of fracturing. The results would be useful for geoscientist, geological resource investigators, disaster management and structural engineers.
