Abstract

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the commonest monogenetic disease worldwide and its greatest burden found in
Sub-Saharan Africa especially Nigeria. Genotype test before contracting marriages has become very imperative
because of the danger it poses on the couples, the offspring and in fact the society at large. This work used
Cartesian product of sets and relations on sets, to explain how sickle cell anaemia can easily be spread fast, if
measures are not taken. Finally, we gave suggestions on how to overcome the menace. The study affirms a
significant probability that offspring from parents who are heterozygous carries of the recessive allele
haemoglobin “S” show a serious sickle cell disease. Therefore, intending couples undergoing genotype test
before marriage still remain the best option to curtail the prevalence of the disease in Nigeria and other nations
of the world, since no pharmacologic therapy has not able to completely suppress the adverse outcomes of sickle
cell disease or introducing a normal gene to completely replace the effect of the abnormal sickle gene, although
several therapies acting on different pathways have shown the ability to provide varying degree of improvement
in outcomes in clinical practice and trails.
