Abstract

The function of language is to express thought, which is the representation of reality. It therefore
necessarily implies that the speaking subject is involved in the activity. His presence may be
intellectual, affective or volitional. Thus, via “enunciative pragmatics analysis of humor in Ernest J.
Gaines’ Of Love and Dust”, the traces of the discourse protagonists will be studied in order to
decipher the contribution of humor to argumentation in the relationship and verbal interaction between
the people.
In other words: what particular orientation does humor bring to the novel? What are the linguistic
effects in the discourse produced by some characters who dare to follow their hearts and break from
tradition? What do protagonists expect from the communicative events? What identity do discourses
produce for individual that enable as well as constrain their actions and abilities to produce alternative
discourse?
