Abstract

The aim of this article is to have an understanding about the different types of tooth wear and their causes. This will enable in effective prevention and play an integral role in management as well. Regressive alteration is a multifactorial disease that causes enamel and dentine loss. Erosion, abrasion, abfraction, attrition and resorption are common causes, or a combination of these lesions. Diagnosis and management of these regressive alterations of teeth is essential for long term functionality of the stomatognathic system as well as for the comfort of the patient. With intervals of activity and inactivity, regressive changes progress over time. Restorations may be necessary, but the best way to extend the life of a tooth is still through prevention. When making a diagnosis and prescribing treatment, it is crucial to have a complete understanding of the causes, symptoms, and indicators of these lesions.
