Abstract

The in vitro effect of the leaf extract of Neem tree (Azadirachta indica : FamilyMeliaceae) is tested on Haemonchus contortus for its nematicidal properties relating to the motility, mortality and histomorphology of various organ-systems of the parasite. The changes are seen mainly in the cuticle involving peeling and etching of the upper layer. The bounding membranes of some internal organs are also affected. The flattening of muscle cells resulting in their detachment from the cuticle is significant. In the anterior region, the cuticle has undergone deep infoldings. The extract gives good results for control of this highly pathogenic parasite. Subsequently the effect of Neem leaf extract will be tested under in vivo conditions, too.
